Lake Lenore began with Bernard Gerwing, who built the first home in the community and is considered its founder. The settlement later shifted about half a kilometre to be closer to the railroad. Gerwing's old home was abandoned in 1916-1917, and the community has since made it a historical site and kept it preserved.
Lake Lenore incorporated as a village on April 28, 1921. It was first known as Lenore Lake, but the name was changed in the 1920s because of a mistake in the railway company's books. It is a primarily German community.
Today the village, about 144 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, has a school, a Co-op grocery and Agro service station, a credit union and a public library. Just to the north lies Lenore Lake, a migratory bird sanctuary and Important Bird Area, with a National Wildlife Area on Raven Island.
